The highly anticipated SBID International Design Awards 2019 winners have been revealed. The SBID International Design Awards has firmly established itself as one of the most prestigious interior design Awards in the global design calendar. The Society of British and International Design (SBID) is one of the leading British professional accrediting bodies, supporting professional and trading standards of UK Interior Designers, Architects and manufacturers. It is the sole representative organisation for the European Council of Interior Architects (ECIA) for the United Kingdom.
The SBID International Design Awards 2019 recognise, reward and celebrate design excellence across a broad range of categories. Winning a SBID International Design Award is a high achievement – they are evaluated by leading industry experts for their technical content and aesthetic creativity while the design-conscious public also has a say in choosing the most inspiring projects.
With more entries than ever before, 2019 SBID International Design Awards have been one of the most globally represented editions to date, with industry talent from over 48 countries across the globe. The international nature of the competition means judges and voters are able to choose from a wide field, both in terms of types of project, scale, value and creative inspiration. The three-tier voting process ensures that all projects are fairly assessed for their technical merit, creative delivery and ability to inspire by those who appreciate and understand truly good design: technical panel > judging panel > public vote.

Overall Winner
Uh May Residence by Roth Architecture
The residence harmoniously blends in with the environment, respecting and honouring the natural habitat that hosts it. With no straight lines or sharp angles, it respects the organic shapes of the ground on which it was built. There is real purpose in its design: to force us to be present, paying attention and observing our every step. The use of ferro-cement was specifically chosen to avoid the introduction of heavy machinery into the jungle, thus preventing the felling of 250 trees. Moreover, the material gives the space a cosy feeling. The finish, carefully crafted with local materials, makes this a unique space of purely organic forms. Meticulously conceived thorough attention to detail and amenities for entertainment, this property redefines life in the jungle, promoting a non-invasive dialogue between architecture and its natural surroundings.
Shows Flats & Developments Winner
Ten York by II BY IV DESIGN
An architectural marvel, Ten York is a 725-unit, 70-storey condominium and inspirational addition to Toronto’s skyline. Recognised by its triangular-shaped wedge, this LEED certified, Tier II Toronto Green Standard building is a model of iconic significance, serving both residential and business sectors. With its tall stance, the grandeur of the exterior facade is reflected in classically designed interiors, impressive in both look and scale. The base of the building acts as a backdrop to the new public park to the southeast of the intersection and is also a brightly lit container for the public art by Josephine Meckseper.
KBB Design Winner
Slopehill Road by Masterwood Joinery
Masterwood’s fusion of oriental and commercial chic successfully interpreted the design brief for this magnificent Queenstown home. Clean, straight lines, natural materials and earthy tones set the scene. In juxtaposition to traditional Chinese sliding screens separating the kitchen from an informal lounge area, heavy-duty steel box section legs support two islands with a commercial stainless steel kitchen extractor suspended above the chef’s island. The chef’s island has a cantilevered teppanyaki grill mounted in Caesarstone, while the pastry island has an outstanding marble work surface. A favourite place in the kitchen is the self-contained coffee station affording sweeping views of The Remarkables mountain range. The six-door glass-fronted display cabinet effectively distracts the eye from two pantry areas, including a fully-equipped butler’s pantry. True to the oriental theme, form and function are in perfect harmony in these pantries.
Retail Design Winner
LUSH Liverpool by Hyphen and Portview Fit-Out
In March 2019, Lush Liverpool opened its doors after a nine-month transformation into the biggest Lush store in the world. Five times bigger than the previous store and spread over three customer-facing floors, the new Lush Liverpool boasts 1,380 metres square of retail space that’s big enough to fit more than 9 million of its famous bath bombs. The characterful scheme by Lush’s in-house design team with international architecture firm, Hyphen, was executed by Portview with an emphasis on enhancing the building’s original features to achieve a look inspired by the character of traditional department stores, while incorporating new materials and services that have never been seen before in a retail environment.
Office Design Winner
Axon Office – “Work-Space-Ship” by ADP Architects
ADP Architects designed and built Axon’s office project and laboratory area which have a total area of 2,160 squares metres. By transforming a spacecraft concept into the real-life Axon office, ADP has brilliantly succeeded in exciting the workforce and inspiring them to think out of the box every day. The office laboratory and Axon office were created with a consistent design language, however, the attributes making the difference in the office laboratory include the technical standards coming from the soundproofing system, materials and lighting standard.
Healthcare & Wellness Design Winner
The Salt Room by Diana Interiors Group
These halotherapy rooms feature Himalayan salt decor as well as a relaxing café/retail unit and kids play area. The Salt Room required enhancements to the heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems in addition to the installation of a halogenerator to ensure that there is an effective, unchanging amount of the dry salt to be dispersed, and mitigate and corroding of the salt in the environment. The walls of the hallway and kids’ play area were hand created by an artist using all-natural paint.
Public Space Design Winner
China Railway Qingdao World Expo City Conference Center by Tengyuan Design
China Railway World Expo City Conference Center as the landmark building of the whole expo city, the whole building is shaped by irregular silk streamline, which conforms to the elegant shape of silk belt and is supplemented by a large-span steel structure. Designers introduce the streamline elements of architecture into the interior, and incorporate the characteristics of the adjacent oceans of Qingdao. It reflects the streamline shape like the ocean wave. In the local, it matches of golden fish to form a unique lamp modeling. In the public area of the hall, the building leisure area combined with the local langyatai culture is created. Westin Hotel is a part of this project, which undertake the functions of reception and residence. Designers introduce the concept of city living room into the interior and incorporate the characteristics of the Qingdao ocean into it. It reflects the streamline shape like the ocean wave.
Development Sales Centre Winner
Gemdale Fenghua International Sales Center Nanjing by Matrix Design
In this project, elements of traditional culture imbue the contemporary space with historical elegance. Horticultural scenes depicted in streamlined, curved lines transform the space into a fairyland. The neat sequences of stone wall stitching and carefully planned lighting combines with a calm domed roof and warm lights to evoke a strong sense of luxury. Geometric shapes, such as the square caisson ceiling, are powerful and energetic. The floating, flowing structure is like a ladder directly extending to the dome, while decorations like book pages sway in the air. It feels like the pathway of a time traveller, taking the viewer into a timeless space. White is the dominant colour. There seem to be no boundaries when walking inside this space, which brings a brand new approach to aesthetics.
Hotel Public Space Design Winner
InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland by CCD / Cheng Chung Design
InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel has been constructed inside an abandoned quarry. To better fit into the surrounding environment, the interior design of the hotel has applied the aesthetics of mining as a concept, combining the wild rocks and vertical cliffs with the natural environment, creating a new conceptualised hospitality culture that only belongs to the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel. To incorporate the inspiration into the design, and to find a balance between the natural landscape and human beings, the designer tried to create harmony between the natural environment and artificial design. The interior design of the hotel is closely attached to the natural landscape and perfectly blended with the surrounding environment. The experience is a cave adventure tour blended with a stay at a luxury hotel.
Restaurant Design Winner
Torno Subito by Bishop Design by Paul Bishop
Ultimately la dolce vita, with colour-bombs and beachside terrace, Torno Subito for Massimo Bottura – crowned the world’s best chef – is an explosion of utterly beautiful reminiscence. Situated within the latest W Hotel offering upon The Palm Jumeirah Dubai, this crazy manifestation of beachside days spent in Rimini, Italy throughout the 1950s and 1960s simply realises the sentiment of Massimo having fun. The venue was to beautifully fuse design, food and influences from the golden days in one harmonious offering, through an intoxicating reflection of Massimo’s affection with the past; also mirroring his culinary approach of ‘tradition in evolution’. With its distinctive storyline, Torno Subito brings a playful charm to the UAE as it completely immerses guests within its narrative; infused with sunshine-yellow tiles, Italian-punk inspired artworks and a Polaroid photo feature ceiling. Entirely ahead of its time, Torno Subito revolutionises the F&B (food and beverage) landscape as a pioneer of immersive dining.
Residential Design Over £1M Winner
Palazzo del Cielo by STA Architectural Group
With sweeping views of the Atlantic, the 47th floor “Palazzo del Cielo” is perched atop an exclusive, oceanfront, tower, the Mansions at Acqualina; located on Florida’s Riviera – Sunny Isles Beach. STA took great pleasure in handpicking each finish; traveling throughout Europe and Asia to find a unique collection of luxury stones. They created a memorable pallet of materials which flow effortlessly – imbuing the space with a strong sense of permanence, freshness and color. STA curated a collection of furniture and art with a color palette echoing the accents of the natural environment; and designed enormous, hand-cast light fixtures and hand-woven area rugs to fill the vast spaces of this penthouse. The end result is the culmination of a seven-year journey for STA and their long-time clients – one to craft a space that can be called “The World’s Finest.”
CGI & Visualisation Winner
The Atlas Building by Angel O’Donnell
Straddling the border between the Square Mile and Old Street, the Atlas Building takes in the best bits of both the City and East London. At 152 meters tall, it is Tech City’s newest and tallest residential addition, towering over all its surrounds. Ken Shuttleworth’s award-winning architecture practice MAKE has designed the building around nine enormous architectural blades, with a staggering design which creates a series of balconies and terraces. Angel O’Donnell was commissioned by its client to design the incredible penthouse on the 38th floor. The design needed to be art-déco inspired while remaining current and cool, fit for the tech titans that would be living in the building and working nearby. The client requested that Angel O’Donnell create CGIs in order to visualise the design within the space that would then also serve for marketing the apartment for letting purposes. The results were truly astonishing.
Hotel Bedroom & Suites Design Winner
Belmond Cadogan London by GA Group
Once the favoured haunt of actress and socialite Lillie Langtry, and of Oscar Wilde, who was infamously arrested in room 118, the hotel has had a rich and illustrious past ever since it was built in 1887. Re-opening in March having undergone a complete transformation to restore the unique heritage of the site, the interiors have now been renovated in a style that is at once contemporary and reflective of the building’s history, with surprising details alluding to the people who shaped its past. The hotel’s 54 rooms and suites provide a stylish retreat in the heart of the city, with spacious rooms that are a little ‘house’ in themselves; many have views over Cadogan Place Gardens and offer spacious living rooms with working fireplaces, handcrafted in-room bars, dining areas as well as large bathrooms with deep freestanding baths and a specially designed champagne and book holder for some ‘me time’.
Residential Apartment Under £1M Winner
Apartment with History by Kolomoiets-Project
The apartment is located in the centre of Kiev in a house whose architectural heritage dates from the 19th century. There are high ceilings, a clear rhythm of windows and good proportions in every room. The project is created in the American classic style of with an emphasis on art déco. The owners of apartments like these prefer quiet, elegant interiors, à la Ralph Lauren. This apartment will make you feel comfortable and cosy; there isn’t any overblown show of luxury to distract the eye. The square footage of the living space is 120 square meters. It consists of the following rooms: foyer, living room, kitchen-dining room, cabinet, bedroom with walk-in closet, bathroom, pantry and laundry. The main space: foyer, living room and kitchen-dining room are designed as a studio. Functional zoning is emphasized by the multilevel ceiling and particularly through the interior objects.
Club & Bar Design Winner
Iris by House of Design by Suzy Habre
Located in Beirut’s waterfront Seaside Pavilion, Iris offers the ultimate bar and lounge experience. Guests can enjoy globally infused dining as well as specialty cocktails and staggering sea views, and be entertained by live international bands and local DJs. The aim was to create a comfortable environment in a well-designed space, without it being overly designed. The core elements consist of a long rectangular bar, a central table, a long couch to the side, an onyx table for fruit displays and surrounding lounges.
