INSIDE World Festival of Interiors 2018 has announced the best interior designs of 2018 across the categories of Civic, Culture & Transport, Creative Re-use, Residential, Display, Hotels, Bar & Restaurant, Health, Education, Offices and Retail and the over all winner!

Held in Amsterdam from 28-30 November alongside World Architecture Festival 2018, INSIDE World Festival of Interiors 2018 is where the global design community meets to be inspired by the latest and greatest in global interior design and architecture. Over three days INSIDE shines a spotlight on the people, projects and developments that are changing the face of global interiors.

At INSIDE’s heart is a global awards programme, which is judged by more than 20 distinguished designers and editors from around the world. Finalists that are shortlisted across nine categories presented their project in person to international judging panels. After a hard fought battle the annual awards encompass the best interior designs from the past 12 months from around the globe.

Yumin Art Nouveau Collection, a poetic glass exhibition in Phoenix Jeju in the South Korean peninsula, has been named as the World Interior of the Year for 2018. The project, conceived by Danish practice JAC STUDIOS, has beaten over 70 finalists across ten categories to be named the World Interior of the Year 2018.

The INSIDE World Festival of Interiors 2018 category winners announced during World Architecture Festival 2018 are:

Winner: Sunny Apartment (Taichung, Taiwan) by Very Studio and Che Wang Architects
Highly commended: Lincoln (Brussels, Belgium) by Notan Office

“A refreshing take on spatial organization of a typical unit flat in a Taiwanese housing development in Taichung”, one of the judges commented. She added: “A well-researched acoustically designed ceiling which enhances the lightness of this inviting space”.

Bars & Restaurants
Winner: Harrison Urby – Entrance Café (Harrison, USA) by Concrete
Highly commended: BO SPACE (Hangzhou, China) by WJ Design
Judges commented: “A project that goes beyond the interior and spreads out to connect with its neighborhood and people.”

Winner: TSH Campus Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain) by The Student Hotel Experience Design Team
“The project serves its exact purposes: to accommodate young people and a creative space that has its own strong identity” said the judges.

Civic, Culture & Transport 
Winner: Australian Embassy (Bangkok, Thailand) by BVN
Highly commended: Lego House (Billund, Denmark) by BIG
The festival judges commented: “Great connection between the urban fabric and the public space with great transition between the Australian and Thai landscape elements.”

Winner: Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (Chicago, USA) by HDR + Gensler + Clive Wilkinson Architects. Judges described the project as an ‘exceptional’ project because it challenges and places patient care at the center of the design process, also able to break away from the historically rigid structure of institutional health care buildings.

Winner: B Campus (Shanghai, China) by AIM Architecture. “The unlimited material palette paired with subtle colour shifts, that flood important spaces, make for a joyful experience for the users” said the judges.

Winner: The Department Store (London, UK) by Squire and Partners
“A respectful design that responds to the heritage building, peeling back layers to reveal its original detail” said the judges.
Joint highly commended: Logistic Republic Automation Warehouse Between Machine, Between Human (Taipei, Taiwan) by JC Architecture AND Frasers Property Australia Head Office (Rhodes, Australia) by BVN

“Through the insertion of cleverly, seductively shaped sculptural elements, the architect has manipulated space to deliver intimacy, drama and delight” said the judges.

Creative Re-use
Winner: Francesc Macia 10 – FM 10 (Barcelone, Spain) by studio mk27
Highly commended: Space & Time (Melbourne, Australia) by Russell & George
“A former office block transformed in the most elegant, aesthetically pleasing way, with a great respect towards the earlier distinctive design. The reconfiguration has enhanced the original envelope” said the judges.

Display and INSIDE World Festival of Interiors 2018

The judges commented: “The existing context, an architecture by Tadao Ando, is respected and a new experience has been created with subtlety. Human sensations are considered: light, bear-footed experience and sitting very close to the floor.”

As well as the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors 2018 Awards programme, visitors to the festival had benn able to experience an in-depth talks programme exploring this year’s theme of ‘Identity’ examining how crossover design is transforming how we live, work and play. The speaking programme featured international interior designers including India Mahdavi, Eva Jiřičná, Partner (AI – DESIGN), Nigel Coates, Christina Seilern and Maria Warner Wong.
