, in partnership with , Cistri, Gehl, Participate in Design, and Camphora, will lead the transformation of 's North-South Corridor into vibrant, interconnected spaces, embodying the city's vision of a ‘City in Nature.'

This ambitious project represents a significant step in redefining urban , with an emphasis on seamless public transport integration, active mobility, and community-focused spaces.

Ng Lang, Chief Executive of the Land Transport Authority of Singapore, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “The North-South Corridor offers a unique opportunity to transform our surface streets into a landmark destination for Singapore. By integrating active mobility, welcoming public spaces, and meaningful connections, we aim to enhance the quality of life for our communities.”

The master plan, led by Henning Larsen's team, aims to seamlessly blend public transport, walkable spaces, and greenery along the 21.5 km North-South Corridor. The surface streets will be designed in collaboration with local communities and stakeholders through a series of public engagement sessions.

The reimagined corridor, described as a ‘life reserve,' will emphasize the need for socially active spaces and diverse mobility options. The design includes four distinct sections:

– A 6 km Community-Industrial Segment that bridges commercial and residential areas.
– A 7 km Ecological Loop focusing on green spaces and biodiversity.
– A 5 km People's Wellness Corridor promoting health and wellness.
– A 3.5 km Cultural-Heritage Segment highlighting Singapore's rich cultural diversity.

These sections will collectively offer over 20 unique experiences and attractions along the corridor.

Leonard Ng, Henning Larsen's Country Market Director, shared his personal connection to the project: “Growing up in a small flat in Queenstown, our common corridor became an extension of our home. This experience shaped my belief in the power of shared spaces to foster deep connections. Our team is not just redesigning a road; we are crafting a living, breathing space that will become a blueprint for future mobility and urban living.”

Aligned with Singapore's aspiration to be a ‘City in Nature,' the North-South Corridor will link neighborhoods and historic districts through green transformations. The project envisions new walking and cycling paths set amidst lush greenery, with canopies designed to create attractive outdoor spaces. The addition of linear parks and enhanced urban ecosystems will help make the corridor a sustainable urban habitat.

Ray Krishna, Head of Smart Mobility APAC at Ramboll, emphasized the corridor's role in promoting sustainable transport: “The common corridor will offer new, immersive experiences at every step, pedal, and bus journey. Our focus on safety and efficient mobility connections will enable new community spaces to flourish.”

The North-South Corridor is set to create dynamic public spaces that cater to the unique needs of local communities, reflect cultural heritage, and adapt to future changes. These areas will offer interactive experiences and foster inclusivity, ensuring that each neighborhood's distinct character is highlighted.

Safety and accessibility are central to the design, with dedicated pathways for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. A new public square along Rochor Road will be designed with pedestrian priority, enhancing social interaction and connectivity in the heart of the city. This square will sit at the crossroads of three culturally rich neighborhoods: Little India, Kampong Gelam, and Albert Street, embodying Singapore's multicultural spirit.

Henning Larsen, leading a diverse team including Ramboll, Cistri, Gehl, Participate in Design, and Camphora, was selected for the master plan consultancy following a two-stage Request for Proposal organized by Singapore's Land Transport Authority. The process drew interest from 26 local and international design teams. The initial phase of the master plan is set to continue over the next 18 months, with a targeted completion by 2026.

By fostering a spirit of co-creation and community engagement, this transformative project promises to shape a new era of sustainable urban development in Singapore, making the North-South Corridor a model for cities around the globe.
